Den nasjonale kirkens misjonsarbeid blant samene i Norge. Kulturell sivilisering eller evangelisk omvendelse?

Rolf Inge Larsen

The national church and the missionary work amongst the Saami. Cultural civilization or evangelical conversion?

The article discusses the aim of the missionary work in the national Norwegian Church amongst the Saami peoples. This missionary work has been tight connected to the national Church of Norway. It is shown that the clergymen until the late 19th century both worked for evangelical conversion and cultural civilization, but after the Norwegianisation policy arose in the 1850s the evangelical perspective became more important. This culminated in opposition form the priest Jens Otterbech, and two years after his death an independent organisation that was grounded on Otterbechs ideas of missionary work.
